Welcome to Contemplative Outreach of Maine
The Contemplative Outreach of Maine Chapter was formed in January of 2021. Its objective is threefold: 1) To offer the Centering Prayer Introductory Program (consisting of the Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop and follow up sessions); 2) Assist in the formation of Centering Prayer Groups through the Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop; 3) Provide support to Facilitators and members of Centering Prayer groups.
Our Philosophy
Our philosophy is based on the Theological Principles and Guidelines For Contemplative Outreach Service outlined in The Vision of Contemplative Outreach by Fr. Thomas Keating. Theological Principle #1 sets the tone for Fr. Keating's vision:
"Contemplative Outreach is a network of communities and individuals seeking the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit and to contribute to the renewal of the Christian contemplative tradition through the practice of Centering Prayer."
Centeredness Awareness
"The dialogue between our comtemplative vision and how we incarnate it is the subject of the Beautitude, 'Blest are the single-hearted for they shall see God.' The single-hearted see God in themselves, in others, and in the ordinary events of life. ...Contemplative Prayer is the place of encounter between the creative vision of transformation and the actual incarnation of that vision day by day. Practice is the translation of the creative vision into the concrete circumstances of each day. ...It must be emphasized over and over that daily life is the fundamemtal practice."
- Fr. Thomas Keating
"The Mystery of Christ"
"Contemplative prayer is the world in which God can do anything. To move into that realm is the greatest adventure. It is to be open to the infinite and hence to infinite possibilities."
